Say it your way.

Alexa needs a skill name to route your request. An Alexa Routine removes that step, so you can say whatever feels natural and still get an answer from your Tesla, or start the climate. Each one takes about a minute to set up.

How to add one

  1. Open the Alexa app and go to More, then Routines.
  2. Tap the plus button, then When this happens, then Voice.
  3. Type the phrase you want to say, for example Tesla battery.
  4. Tap Add action, then Custom.
  5. Type the matching action below exactly, then save.

Add it to a routine you already use

The same custom action works inside any existing routine. Adding ask Chit Chat if my car is plugged in to a goodnight routine answers the question before you are already in bed wondering.

Notes

  • Routines match the phrase you typed fairly literally, so pick words you will actually say.
  • Avoid smart-home words. If your phrase contains set, turn on, mode, limit, or normal, Alexa may look for a device named Chit Chat and answer “couldn’t find that device.” Everyday wording works better: “prep for a road trip” and “done with the road trip” both route reliably. Either “ask” or “tell” is fine.
  • Routines sidestep this entirely: the custom action is sent to the skill directly, so a Routine works even when the same phrase spoken aloud would be intercepted.
  • Your EV ChitChat account must be linked in the Alexa app first.
  • Scheduled routines cannot read a parked Tesla, because the car sleeps and EV ChitChat will not wake it. Voice-triggered routines are the reliable kind today.
